A Pair of Chinese Candleholders and Candles, Date 1942

A rare and unusual pair of Spruce candleholders in the form of a vase, together with a pair of candles, specially made for a wedding event. The pair of candleholders is deeply carved with a four-season floral design in each side. The vase is rising from the wooden base, which is carved from the same piece of wood. Floral represents life and prosperity while”vase” means “safe” in traditional Chinese culture.

A Chinese character “Xi” means “double happiness” and has overlay on the pattern of “Wen” ground in the four sides of the candles. The pattern of “Wen” is one of the symbols of the Eight Treasures of Buddhism, it represents “infinity”.

It has a last name and date written at the bottom of each vase. It was a lady’s last name “Ye”, married to her husband named “Wu”. In the Chinese culture, woman after marriage keep their own last names but will add the husband’s last name in front of her own last name. The date on a Western calendar is 1942.

There are two chips on the base of each candleholder, besides this it is in good condition. The supporting sticks of each candle were gone and there are minor chips and age cracks around the candle.
