Chinese Wood Sculpture in the Scholar's Rock Form
An early 19th Century, Chinese wooden sculpture in the, “Scholar’s” or “Garden Rock” form, with stand. The wood sculpture is set upright to simulate a garden rock shape set on top of a square wooden stand. It has a bat and a dragonhead mounted behind the rock while a little toad is resting on the side. The wooden stand has curved square legs ending in cabriole feet. This stand form is often seen in “Jiangsu Garden” design. The wood sculpture is quite heavy in weight so it is probably made from walnut (hetaomu), while the stand is probably elm. Both items are coved with lacquer.
In the Chinese culture the dragon represents power, the bat symbolises blessings, the toad symbolises wealth.
The condition of this sculpture is excellent, except one minor new cut on the backside of the rock, and an old chip at the bottom of the rock. The wooden stand is in excellent condition.
