Chinese Opium Pipe – Late 19th – Early 20th Century

Unlike tobacco pipes, which tended to be made in one piece, opium pipes have multiple often-complex parts. Particular types of opium pipes are designed with an opium chamber. The pipe stems are usually 16 – 20 inch (41 – 51cm) in length, made from bamboo, wood or ox-horn. One end open and the other end sealed. The open top has a connecting flange, made of copper for inserting into the opium chamber. The opium chambers are usually globular or octagonal in shape, hollow, with a tiny hole in the flat upper surface allowing air to enter the chamber. Chambers are usually made from a type of fired clay from Yi-Xing Province. The open end is connected to the mouthpiece.

The mouthpiece of this pipe is made of jade and chamber holder is ox-horn. The stem is natural wood with original burgundy lacquer finish. There is a maker and manufactory mark under the chamber. The condition of this pipe is excellent with some age

Length 13 3/4 inch (30.5 cm)
