A Chinese Lamp with Reverse Glass Painting, 19th-20th C
A six panel Chinese lamp made from hongmu (blackwood) and hetaomu (walnut wood) together with reverse glass painted inserts for each panel.
The reverse glass painted panels depict a scene of famous Chinese historical novel figures “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” The figure with a beard is Zhang Fei, the figure with a long beard and holding a large, tall knife is Guan Yu and the figure with two different styles of clothing, (one is in a scholar’s style and the other is a General’s style with a long horned hat) is Liu Bei. This is most likely the novel’s scene of The Yellow Turban Rebellion “Huang Jin Qi Yi”, that describes how “Liu Bei” built up his own forces.
Apart from some loss to the painted surface on the glass plates, condition of all six reverse glass painted panels are great. Each glass panel is backed with Chinese rice paper and is always replaceable. The honey color wood glass frames are all made from hetaomu (walnut wood) and the lamp frame is made from hongmu (blackwood). There is some restoration to the lamp and glass frames. The lamp has been modified and wired for electric light functionality. The brass hock on top center is a replacement piece.
All glass panels are removable and the lamp frame is foldable.
