Blackwood (Hongmu) Square Tray, Mid 19th Century
Rarely seen, blackwood (hongmu) square tray with openwork frame carved into a tendril design, black lacquered center panel with a low, mitred foot pad on each corner.
This item was probably used to display important art or scholar’s objects. The tray was originally from Northern China and dates to approximately the mid-19th century.
Condition of this tray is excellent. Minimal restoration to some carved panels and very light touch-up to protect the lacquered panel. I find that sometimes it is difficult for individuals to evaluate the age of polished hardwood items from photographs and have decided not to polish this piece until it is sold.
